For many reasons actualy.

The most recognized is to escape from Cathloic England.

Another is becuase you there was much land in the New World, where you coudl actualy buy it. In England you where not allowed to break up land then sell it, it must be sold as a whole. And when the father died, his eldest soen got the land, while he bought the youngers sons important jobs, and married the girls off to rich men.

Another is so they could find jobs. England was moving to sheep, where you need good dogs, not people. In the New World there was much oppertunity to make a living.

And Finally, to escape prison. Becuase many people didn't ahve jobs, they didn't have money, so they could not pay off thier debts. And if you didnt pay your debts, you went to jail. The jails where so full, that England would pardon thier debts if they moved to the New World.
