Personally, I consider Musial an outfielder.
1B only-- I'd have to go with McCovey & Mattingly

Rafael Palmeiro. Musial was an outfielder (plus he played several years before 1950), Mattingly was really only good at the plate in terms of power from '84-'89 (although at one point after he retired he had the highest fielding percentage of all time for a first baseman---don't know if that still holds true), McCovey was pretty much nothing but a homerun hitter (i.e., run production left something to be desired), McGwire was so often injured, Pujols (besides having played too much of his career at other positions---3B, OF) needs to play a full decade before he can be said to be "the best."
If you overlook the steroid issue, which you have to do anyway if you want to consider McGwire (andro, anyone?), Palmeiro has a respectable average and on-base percentage, excellent power numbers and good run production, and was a great fielder with good range. Eddie Murray is the closest second, in my opinion. Compared with Palmeiro, he got on base less, scored fewer runs, hit for less power, played more games at first, had greater range at first (though with a slightly lower fielding percentage), drove in about the same number of runs per 162, and struck out more. Interesting fact about Eddie Murray: he is currently first all time with 128 sac. flies (Palmeiro had 119).

If you allow Musual, you'd probably have to consider Pete Rose.
Off the top of my head, as far as full-time first basemen, Rose’s Big Red Machine teammate Tony Perez would have to be a favorite. He had a long, successful career, was an RBI machine and pretty smooth in the field.
