My friend was going through his freezer, and found a jewelry box. He opened it and saw that inside it, someone had spelled out his girlfriend's name in salt.

He suspects his mother, since she seemed embarrassed when he brought it up.

We're guessing that it's his mother hoping for him to propose to his girlfriend, but neither of us has ever heard of this particular practice or superstition before. Any help would be appreciated!

My friend also wants me to add that, under the box, there was a ziploc bag with a torn piece of paper with his girlfriend's name written on it.

He also wants to know what "binding" means... he doesn't know any kind of magical terminology at all. And he also wants to know what happened to the co-worker who was "on-ice".

does his mom like the girlfriend? that would tell us a lot. if she doesn't like her, i think she may have been trying to perform a form of sympathetic magick to get the relationship to cool off. the fact that it was in a jewelry box is probably just incidental, probably the only box she could find. i don't think she was necessarily trying to bind her in this instance.

My guess is that she casted some sort of spell. I wouldn't call it a superstition. I've utilized the freezer in some spells for binding. By using sypathetic magick, I once put a co-worker "on ice", which worked beautifully. I wonder if she's trying to bind the girl? Hmmm.

Maybe see if she's got any spell books laying around that would explain...or just ask her.
