I always wonder why people would buy items off of EBAY when you can buy from a store that you can return it to & not pay postage, thats where most of all the new items come from used items are different story.

One word: convenience.

You can sit at your desk and find the items. You don't have to drive all over town. Most of the things I've bought on ebay are not found in local stores.

I am an American ex-pat living in Ireland and occassionally I would like items that I know I could easily purchase in America that are not readily available here. However, I found and purchased it on ebay. It was quite reasonable in price and was happy with the service.
I have considered buying items online at different stores including ebay for Christmas gifts. I think it will help with finances for me to purchase an item on ebay from the U.S. and have it shipped to my families address in the U.S. I think it would be cheaper for me to do it this way than having to ship huge packages from Ireland to the U.S. It seems like a great idea for me. Ebay has a huge selection of items and on occassion you can find a good deal.
It is easy to shop online for some people than having to go to the store (e.g. people that are house bound, can't drive, for people who live in remote areas where there is limited shopping choices). Not everyone lives near a huge shopping mall or gets the opportunity to go shopping all the time. It is easier to log onto the computer in the comfort of your own home. No driving, no crowds, no hassles, and you can sip on a cup of Mocha while you shop. How about listening to your favorite tunes while shopping.. lol.
Our stores in Ireland do not stay 'open' as late as the stores do back at home. Hey, the internet is open 24/7/365..lol:0)
It is a shoppers dream!!!..............................................

There is also a 'thrill' to become the highest bidder for the real addicted gambler types.. lol.

I usually buy items on eBay that I can't find locally. I have had three problems out of hundreds of transactions that, in retrospect, where my fault for not reading descriptives more carefully. On the other hand I've had issues where I've contacted the seller and the problem was resolved quickly. Yes, you pay shipping but, like a lot of Internet purchases, you don't often have to pay tax.

You can get some items a lot cheaper than at the store and quite often you can find new items there.

Because a lot of things on e-bay are hard to find in other places! It's a lot better than roaming around town for hours trying to find something, when you can just go on e-bay and get it in minutes or less!
