The roof on my dad's back room has been leaking pretty badly for about two years. He's put tarps on the roof itself and on the ceiling, but that no longer stops the leak. The extension's roof is flat and shingled. At this point the water damage is so bad the ceiling beams are exposed. He hasn't called a roofer because he's on a fixed income and is terrified of the costs. Anyone have any alternatives to offer? Thank you!

Is he terrified of the costs (and consequences) for when the roof finally caves in? How about when he has to pay to cool and heat the house with just a tarp covering the opening? Or how about having to pay for black mold removal?

So either learn how to do the roof yourself...not that hard. Or suck it up and pay a roofer to do it.

Sounds like you have waited too long already, when it was first noticed was the time to fix it "cheaply", now there is wood damage, and it's going to cost more than just patching or shingling.
