my mom's gonna let me and my sis get a puppy, but we're stuck on what breed to get?
we have a big 2 story house with a big backyard.
we live in the suburbs.
and basically, there's plenty of room for a dog to run around and live.
we're at home most of the time.
we have a parakeet, turtle, and fishes
the ages of the family are 40, 36, 13, 9
um, i hope those help.
so, from your experience can you give me the pros and cons of each breed, and which breed you recommend? thank you.

Both are wonderful dogs. Are you 13 years old? If so, decide what you want most to do with the dog. If you like to run and bike, hike, etc. a lab would love to do that with you. Poodles can be pretty active too, but hiking, etc. is what a lab loves most; they love the water too. If the things you do are things that you would rather carry a dog around or have it on your bed while you read, etc. then get a poodle. Get the type of dog that fits you and your families lifestyle. Remember there is a lot of work with a puppy. He / she will need taking care of at first and won't be doing what you want to do.

All in all though I believe a lab is a wonderful family dog.

This depends on the breed of poodle, small dogs often have serious bathroom troubles and can make very large messes very fast even considering there size but full size poodles are considered to be very good dogs still with a full size poodle there are a lot of factors to consider such as grooming, poodles do not grow a predetermined hair length so they have to be trimmed and this can be expensive and a little to dangerous for a family member to perform. Labs are very good family dogs, they have the golden retriever temperment but without all of the shedding, (not that they don't shed but just not as much), labs are also more willing learners, all dogs can learn tricks but some find it mroe fun then others and labs are a good example of a dog that loves to play and learn tricks.

Both breeds are smart and easy to train. They're both generally good with children. Of course every dog is different and there's always exceptions to those two points.
The only negative for a poodle is they require a lot of grooming to keep their hair clean and neat. It could be more or less depending on what type of clip your family chooses for the dog, but I'd say either one is a good choice.
Labradoodle is a mixed breed and it's not recognized by the AKC. Just like Puggles, and all the other random breeds people slap together and then they give these cutsie names for them... I'm not saying it's a bad mix, but if you're looking for AKC papers and all.. that won't work.

I have had a number of Labs and love them, BUT a good friend just got a Labradoodle and it is the best of both breeds! Non-shedding, dries quickly, and smart smart smart. Has the best characteristics of both breeds. Standard poodles are one of the smartest breeds out there, so the person who called poodles ankle biters is thinking of the small ones, not standard. Her dog is smart, gentle, loving, and she has a 6 year old and 9 month old. Good luck deciding! Keep in mind this will be a BIG dog when deciding.

Get a labradoodle! It has the best of both breeds. It is very friendly, loyal, intelligent and is even good with kids. Depending on what type you get (what kind of coat) it can be very hypoallergenic. It can walk on two legs like a poodle and lays stretched out like a Labrador. Our dog can do tricks and thinks he's a lap dog. Our dog father was a small poodle so he is only around 35 pounds. Look them up on the Internet. They are wonderful!

the answer is obvious...
well, actually the best choice would be the golden retriever but oh well... allright . i know why the labrador is better. sofirst of all, they are cuter, funer, stronger, and mostly protectivre a e.ors a they can protect you from everything and they are so fun i could spend a hole month only with labradors and goldens.... my familys ages are pretty much the same so i could say that labrador is a so much better choice than the poodle...i hate poodles! HOPE IT HELPS :)

Get the Lab. Poodles are considered to be an agressive breed and are not good in a family situation.

labs are high energy and you have to walk them and just leaving them in the back yard is not exercise! what size poodle? mini? lower energy than a lab and is a nonshedding dog, but they have to be groomed. go to the akc web site and it will give a description of all the breeds, but try a shelter or breed rescue first, they have them for all breeds. you get puppy mill dogs at pet stores! which will have all kinds of health problems, promise.

I think you should get a Lab. They are very good dogs and I would not pick any thing else. I have 3 a 2 year old, 2 month, and 1 month. I love them so much.

Well, it is a matter of preference. I have always preferred big dogs and I had a wonderful black labrador. They have wonderful energy, are great with kids and have such a happy personality. And, the fact that you have a big backyard is definitely a necessity for that breed....they love to run and play. That would be my choice.
