My boyfriend had some friends over and someone kicked the door when it was locked, so the side where the doorknob is all busted. I heard wood putty is best for fixing holes in the doors but that would be hard to do since the hole where the doorknob goes through is all busted as well. What would be the best way to fix it without buying a whole new door? Thanks for the help!

The frame is fine it's just the edge of the door where the knob is all busted. I hope there is a way to fix it since I know the guy won't pay for it. :(

You can buy what is called a "wrap-around" door reinforcer at most hardware stores or home centers. It is made from a sheet of brass, covers the damage, and has the holes already made to hold the lock.

It is actually pretty easy to install. You may have to cut away some of the broken wood, especially on the door's edge, where the latch protrudes.

To get the right size, measure from the center of the knob hole to the edge of the door. That distance is called the "backset". It will either be 2-3/8 inches or 2-3/4 inches. They only come on two sizes. Residential doors are usually 2-3/8.

These are specifically made to repair doors that have been kicked open by drunken idiots.

Sounds like you need a new door and a new frame. $200 at Lowes. Have his dumb drunk @$$ pay for it.
