kinda confusing, but how do you grow an inch because you shrink an inch because of gravity? Do you have to grow two inches?

no, you have to maintain good posture, you loose an inch at the end of the day because you are slumping.

Between each vertabrae bone there is a cushion that is filled with water like a sponge. When you wake up the cushion is bigger and has more water. At the end of the day, the pressure from gravity has squeezed some water out.

The growth happens in your bones up to a certain age. If you did not stop growing than at 50, you would be 20 feet tall.

I am not sure this old wives's tale is 100% aaccurate, but the explanation goes like this.

During the day when you are up on your feet, the disks between your vertebra (spinal bones) which are a gelatinous material are compressed and loose water. While you are sleeping the compression is removed allowing the disks to rehydrate and re-expand. You are not actually growing and shrinking.
