I tore a $20 bill, and only have the left 1/4 of it left. Can I get a full $20 bill for it at a bank?

You need 3/4 of the bill to get a new $20 bill.

you must have at least half of the bill (51%), OR it must be evident from the damage that the rest of the bill is destroyed, for example if the bill was only 25% there, but the edges are burnt so it is obvious that the rest was burned.

Plus, banks aren't obligated to exchange it, the federal government will exchange large quantities of damaged or partailly missing bills if you can prove how and why they were damaged, (example again, if you had a wad of cash that was partially burned when your house burned down)

I'd count it as a $20 lesson in taking better care of your stuff.

No, you have to show atleast 51% of the bill. Other wise you could tear a $20 in to 3 and get $60 back.

think about it...
If you could, i would take a $100 bill...rip the left 1/4 off and right 1/4 off...take both 1/4's 2 different banks and i'd have 2 hundred dollar bills.

You need the 2 serial numbers to show that they match. What did you do with the rest of the bill?

tore it? im pretty sure there has to be atleast half, or else the bill has lost its value, and is nolonger legal US currency, but act really nice to the teller, maybe they'll give you a break.

If the "most" or "all" the serial number is there, maybe. Check with a bank. They may require all the number.
