We took a cue from everything going on around us.
Corporations screw up and lose money. You think the CEO resigns? Heck no. He lays off 20% of the workforce and gives himself and the Board a big bonus.
Our elected officials accept more bribes and grift more than we can imagine, then preach to us about family values or the need for more taxes to pay for improvement projects that could have been funded without raising taxes if they did away with all their pork barrel projects.
Our ministers get caught with hookers and underage children and claim the devil made them do it. After a short pennace, they're back in action.
Our celebrities are totally self absorbed, and spend half their time in rehab and the other half undoing everything they learned in rehab.
Our friends seem anxious to stab us in the back the moment it appears to be in their best interest, while our significant others seem to be with us only until something better comes along.
Everything is a sham, a con, and designed to take advantage of you in every way possible. Just read the fine print.
It's a brave new world folks. Best stop asking why and start dealing with the reality.

There is very little of it, from the Office of the President right down to me and you. Bush doesn't take responsibility for his mistakes and fails to account for his actions. Congess blames everything on the other party, or the President. We have become a nation of teenagers, always blaming someone else, or circumstances beyond our control, for our own mistakes, inactions, and shortcomings.

A question we should all ask ourselves next time we enter a voting booth
... Until we clearly ask for it, our broken government is not going to change on it's own ... both Dems and Republicans are more concerned with power and getting re-elected than they are with personal responsibility and accountability

I'm sorry but I have to blame much of the lacking of responsibility and accountability in people on their parents.

Americans have let it be taken away from us. They complain about someone doing things they dont like. Example spanking kids, and then its becomes illegal to disapline a kid in public. But the Public want kids to behave, but dont teach them in front of them?????? Come on.... Like people who dont want to work or take care of themselves. So the government comes and saves the day. But are they really helping anything?? So on top of lots of rude and lazy people, everyone wants someone else to handle everything. Some people dont realize that our freedoms are being taken away since we dont take some responsibility and being held accountable for our actions.

Simply, it isn't being taught in the home anymore. Look at all the people who are blaming some form of the government!
Let's take a topic like debt for instance - A lot (NOT ALL) are in debt because they spend more than they earn. They do not budget. Now it is somebody else's fault that there is no more money at the end of the month.

It went the way of blaming it some sort of disorder. Then once diagnosed the offender gets government aid, perpetuating the disorder to the point that the disorder is more productive than being productive. Our society is on Zoloft, Percadin, Prozac, and Vicodin.

It went the way of self respect and respect for authoritative figures. Forgotten and allowed to disappear since the inception of Dr. Spock's "no spanking" theory.
Future generations will be even worse and the world will become a more evil place in which to live.

The lawyers somehow convinced everyone that nothing is their own fault...If you loaded a box with too much and it broke and hurt you in the process it is the manufactures fault...If you put hot coffee between your legs and then burn yourself it is the restaurants fault...Our society has become blameless for their own actions due to the ease of legal recourse and the money involved in settlements.

Sort of a vague and general question, dontcha think?
Those two items have always been pivotal for me in my personal life.
If your question has social or political implications, I would say that people from both major parties display a lack of same.
Lack of integrity is an equal opportunity employer; it is not significant to either one.
