This question gets asked a lot and it is hard to keep repeating the answer. So I took a lot of good Q and A on publishing and starred them. The Writer's Market 2008 contains every step on publishing including how to get an agent, why you should, what they will do, how they will help, what to do if you don't want an agent, how to submit your work to publishing companies, which companies lean towards a particular genre, what companies will accept more first-time novelists, etc.
