That's an excellent question.
I think we do. I've tried to be the right sort of person and take some disadvantaged people under my wing, but they become clingy and I can't handle it.
An example is a woman who had two beautiful little girls and was abused by her live-in boyfriend, who was father of the little girls. I took her to the grocery store and bought decent food, took her to the mall and paid to get her ears re-pierced, ran her to errands. And suddenly, she was occupying all of my time and I felt smothered. I had to back off.
So, yes, for the most part, I tend to stick with "my own."

I think we just get to a level that we feel comfortable in. It is a shame though, I think I could have achieved a much higher level, who knows I might yet.

Interesting observation. I think we're probably comfortable with what we consider "our level". Yet I hope most of us are equally comfortable reaching above to see what else we can reach for, and to reach below to give others a hand.

Tis so very true, JennyAnn4. It is called a comfort zone. Sometimes, I actually step out of it.
