Why the Bald Eagle?

Why is a Bald Eagle called a Bald Eagle? It' not bald.

Bald in the English name is derived from the word piebald, and refers to the white head and tail feathers and their contrast with the darker body.

the white on top appears similar to baldness, comapred to the rest of the brown feathering.

Perhaps because of the white head compared to the dark wings?
