You won't need a work permit. I don't know what sort of work you are looking for or how long you plan to stay, but be prepared that wages are a lot lower than the UK. For example, working in an office or as a waiter/waitress you can expect to earn around £400-500 Cyprus Pounds per month and usually you only get one day off per week. There are no employment agencies as such, so the best thing to do is to drop your CV at places that you would like to work. The Cyprus Weekly is the newspaper where most vacancies are advertised. Obviously, if either of you speak Greek, this will increase your earning potential and widen the choice of jobs available to you. (Most non-Greek speakers end up working in the tourism industry, which typically are the lower paid jobs).

August is when many Cypriot businesses close for holidays, so most people don't start recruiting new staff until September. If you are looking for seasonal work, bear in mind that over the winter months, there are not as many tourists, so many restaurants tend to close Nov-Feb.

Good luck.

As an UK citizen it should not be to much of a problem, with Cyprus joining the EU.

I think this site tells you all you need to know:
http://www.anyworkanywhere.com/visas_cy.html

If it does not, go to the site of the Cyprus Embassy or Consulate for the country you are a citizen, and read the visa and residency info there.
Most countries put that info in a good to find spot.
