The head index in Southwest Louisiana stays over 100 most days, it will be this way until November or so. Classes at the University started today and the AC is broken in several buildings. My friend is wondering if it is legal if not completely unethical to force students to attend classes this way. I'm sure she could get a refund still as they just started but she would lose an entire semester. We're considering contacting the newspaper. She's sensitive to heat as is and today was unbearable she had to leave 3 hours early.

First of all they've been told it won't be fixed until October. Second of all this happened last semester and she had heat exhaustion and had to leave school for a week. I understand going to class is a choice but she also paid several thousands of dollars to be subjected to no ac in any of the buildings. And none of the windows open in them either.

your friend may have a grounds to file suit against the University for negligent maintainence of school buildings, thus subjecting her to emotional stress and physical harm.

However, there is nothing "illegal" about not having buildings with no air conditioning.

Legal? yeah. I guess you could have a "sit down strike", but, why? Most schools work with this. If they don't have open rooms somewhere else, you really don't have a choice. Yes, its a pain, but, a lawsuit? are you serious? Won't make the A/C work any faster. Doesn't get you the credit for the class. Just give it a day or so. If you don't go through channels, all you are doing is making your life harder. Do you want your money back because you don't have A/C? Whereas, its hard, its not going to kill you for a few days. Now, if days go to a week, yeah, i'm up in arms, especially if i don't see them working on it. I don't think you want to start something you can't finish...

Drink lots of water... Get a CAMEL from Walmart for 20.00 and wear it. it will keep you cool if you freeze the water.

You would think listening to this that we all have a "right" to a/c. We all hear about the elderly people that are dying in their homes because of the heat wave. They are incapable of LEAVING their homes for any amount of time and have no a/c. You are only attending a few hours of class Get over yourselves. There are so many other people that have been affected by the heat that have NO chance of a/c. To think that you are university students and this self absorbed! It is not like you live in these classrooms!

It's legal. Think of all the years that they did this before the invention & widespread use of AC. Tell her to drink lots of water and dress for the weather, or transfer to a northern school. There are some schools in northern Michigan where they probably have the snow plows on the front of the trucks already, just waitin' for that first snowstorm.

theres lots of schools that dont have ac's or break down.. its according to the school..
I know an elementary school here that ac was broken sent all the kids home early.
This is a great story for your local paper though.. contact them and I'm sure the school will do something about it!!!!
Or find the university chancelor. Ask them.

Air conditioning is considered a luxury - not a necessity. So no it is not illegal for classes to be held without air conditioning. Dress appropriately and drink lots of fluids. I'm sure that there will be fans in the rooms to at least blow some of the air around.

I don't think that it is illegal because going to classes are a choice. However, I know that I would raise a huge stink about the whole thing. I'd contact the newspaper, the school, and anybody that would listen to me about the dangerous heat conditions at my school.

I see our kids are getting softer and softer every day. Not surprised though, every generation since mine has gotten weaker and softer.

Go to class and learn. They will fix the A/C, at least the building has it right?

Biggest problem I see is you watch too much law TV, no you can' sue, it's not illegal, your constitutional rights haven't been violated, you won't go sterile, there's not a right wing conspiracy, your brain won't cook, and you'll be surprised you will actually live.

If there is proper ventilation in the buildings, yes, it's legal.

Very uncomfortable, but legal.
