Uh... without any additional information?

If the group already has a balanced party and you're really an additional character that doesn't have to fill a specific role, Bards are the best hands down.

With your class abilities (songs), you can easily boost the performance of the rest of the group.
Go DEX as your secondary attribute after CHA, take Weapon Finesse, a rapier and make Cat's Grace one of your 2nd level spells, and you'll be able to help out in melee quite well (a mithral chain shirt would be the perfect armor).
Pick your additional spells to back up other roles as needed (Cure Light Wounds can save the party if your only cleric ever goes down).

In terms of race, you're pretty flexible if you stay single classed (which is really best in 3.5, I don't find any of the bard prestige classes all that convincing). Elf or halfling are best at supporting the melee backup role due to their DEX bonus; it's not that big a thing though, and half-elf, gnome or human work just as well if you prefer or need their racial abilities.

Try the Warlock class from Complete Arcane. Its a magical ray-shooting class that can fire an beams at-will, and they start to hit pretty hard as your levels go up. They also get a number of at-will abilities.

Scouts from Complete Adventurer are a lot of fun too, you never stop moving and are constantly firing off shoots which can do skirmish damage, sneak attacks for non-rouges. (Khobalds make phenomenal scouts and no one suspects a thing.)

If you want magic AND fighting, become either a Beguiler or a Duskblade(?) from Player's handbook 2. A beguiler is an illusionist and mind controller with rouge skills, and a Duskblade is a Warrior/Sorcerer (Warmage) hybrid base class.

If you have the Book of Nine Swords, anything from there can be fun, but you'll end up overshadowing other physical combat types unless they are BoNS to.

Pop me a message if you need any furthur help.

Usually I tend to get mage classes, but monks are also good too! It really all depends if your DM is letting you choose your character and about personal taste. If the DM is letting you, then I'd choose something that can use both magic and fight good at the same time! If you can make an Elf fighter/mage then that's REALLY good! I have one and he is REALLY good! Also, ask your DM if you can use characters such a psionics! They are a bit weak, but if they are protected by someone tough they can be a WONDERFUL asset! But like I said, it really all depends on your taste and what you would feel comfortable playing as! If you need any more help choosing a character then e-mail me at tyreeslookalike@yahoo.com and I'll see how I can help!
