Buy a wicker laundry basket and fill it with little things from the baby aisle. Wipes, Baby wash, washclothes, burp clothes, etc etc. HAVE FUN. Put some chocolate in there for mom... and gum, etc.

hes a big baby get clothes that are big too

my daughter was 8 lbs at birth and she outgrew everything sooo fast! the clothes that were tagged combo age/size werent very useful get the clothes that are just 3 mos or 6 mos

by the time baby is 3 months i bet hes almost big enough for 6 mos and its better to have loose fitting clothes than tight - so get a few 3 mos several 6 mos and 1 or 2 9 mos then when they feel hes too big for his current size they have something ready to go!

get clothes that zip or snap all the down the front pulling i hated pulling clothes over my babies head she hated it more than me.

some baby mitts so baby doesnt scratch his face - my daughter would scream and go straight for her eyeballs with her little talons

if you spend alot of time with them and know babies routine offer to stay home with the baby so they can get a break.i always want someone to rescue me from diapers and bottles but noone really knows what my baby likes(shes really picky) and i worry if i leave so i cant relax and wind up going home early

help with laundry cleaning small errands whenever you can they will both really appreciate it just dont stop helping i got a lot of help during the first month but thats it.iwould still like help with things even after 5 months babies are hard work - especially the big ones...lol they always want to eat

Diapers are always appreciated. I would buy them a pack of size one diapers, since the baby will be into that size before long. You really can never go wrong with diapers, since they're a necessity.

Bigger clothes is also smart. Think about warmer stuff for the winter and get 6 month sizes.

Do they have a swing? We had something like this http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=900002&e=storeproduct&pid=39933§ion=inf_babygear and it was a lifesaver. If they already have a swing, what about a bouncy seat like this http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=900002&e=storeproduct&pid=38712§ion=inf_babygear
it's always great to have something smaller to put the baby in so they can watch their parents in action, and so mom and dad can get some things done around the house. I used to take showers with the bouncer in the bathroom. My son also used to conk out in both the bouncer and the swing, so that was an added bonus.

And if you're low on money, just offer to go over and play with the baby so his mom can take a shower. Oh man, showers were special at first. They never happened! They were a big deal.

Outfits that zip or snap ALL THE WAY up the front.

I HATE trying to put anything on a newborn that has to go over his head.

ALSO! I agree with the previous answerer who said Offer to watch the baby while they CATCH UP ON SLEEP!! Especially if you can do an 8-hour overnight. New Moms get soooooo stressed because they don't get enough sleep.

I wished that I had gotten more visitors who were willing to throw in a hand. Offer to tidy up, run the hoover or throw in a load of laundry. We had tons of guests who were waiting to be entertained. So I ended up doing everything while *they* got to hold MY baby. That lasted a day before my hubby said no more visitors. Grab a meal-on-the-go, make lasagna, pot-roast, or buy a meal. Ring up your brother and partner, then offer to tidy up. They'll of course say no, but do the dishes anyway.

You can offer them a day or even a few hours to themselves. Take the baby so they can have some alone time or time for mom just to take a nice long nap. Moments like that are precious and few..

You could clean the house for them. My mother came and did that for me. It was awsome. I would get a pack of Gerber onsies from Walmart in sizes bigger than he is now. I love the Gerber Brand. If you can cook go over and cook them a few dinners. Ones that can be froze so they can just heat and eat. Congratulations on your new nephew.

Gift cards are great, because mom can get all of the little things she never realized she'd need!

Also, I bought my son a Womb Sounds Bear when he was 2 months old. I wish I had gotten it earlier - he adores it. Here's a link to one available from Target.com:

I wish I had someone to help me when I was home alone for my six weeks.
Some days it was hard for me to even get a shower.
