You can live on water supprisingly a long time. There have been people stranded in places (mountains, mines) for over a month and have lived because they have found water. Another very important fact is how much a person weights because the body needs to get energy from someplace. I have heard that the longest someone has lived in a mine cave in is 28 days.

Medical Doctors Commonly cite 4 to 6 weeks without food
1. 10 Political Prisoners in Ireland Lived 46 to 73 days before succumbing to lack of food
2. 12 individual starvation protestors Two lost tongues, 1 lost feet, 7 on kidney dialysis
3. Many war prisoners Lived 28 to 40 days with no food
World War II concentration camps With only 300 to 600 calories per day, many thousands did not have enough food to survive more than a few months at best.
4. Terminally Ill patients live 10-days to 3-weeks without food depending upon initial heath
5. Obese Can live from 3-weeks up to 25-weeks and more without food depending upon initial health and amount of fat
6. Mahatma Gandhi Survived a 3-week fast while in his 70's

Our thoughts and prayers go out to these miners and their families.

A healthy person can go a month with no food...but only a few days without water. That said, I heard reports that there is a lot of water in the mine. There didn't seem to be a great concern that they would die of thirst...though certainly any water in the mine is not very clean.

You can survive for a while without food. It can vary a little depending on how much fat your body has built up. But you need water. I think the limit is within a week without water.

If they survived the initial collapse and the repercussions that it caused they could quite possible be alive.

I feel for their loved ones, because according to the news the rescuers are giving up. If this is the case, i hope they died instantly, instead of being buried alive with no hope of a rescue...what a horrible way to go!

I don't understand why they would not take active measures to continue, even if they have to tear the mine apart.

I think they are dead but what if I'm wrong.
