We were given a Fotar 675 telescope as a gift, it has an instruction book but it might as well be in Chinese for all the sense it makes. I assembled the unit but I don't think I did it properly. Is there a website or a pdf available that goes into indepth instruction and operation?

I might be able to help, but I need some information first...

1) What type of scope is it? Reflector, refractor, or compound? (A reflector has the eyepiece up near the front of the scope, and a large mirror at the back. A refractor has the eyepiece at the back of the cscope, and a large lens on the front. A compound scope has the eyepiece at the back, and a large mirror at the end of the tube where the eyepiece comes out.)

2) What kind of mount does it have? (How is the telescope attached to the tripod?)

Reply back with this info and I can give you additional assistance.

Addition to response:

I got your pic - it's a 4.5" Newtonian Reflector on an Equatorial mount.

This site has detailed instructions on how to collimate (align) the optics to get the best result.

From the pic, you may have the finder scope in backwards, but not to clear on which end of that finder has the big hole and which has the little one...

Hope this helps!

Because so many simple telescopes come with such awful instruction sheets, "The Backyard Astronomer's Guide" By Dickinson and Dyer (new edition) has a generic fully illustrated guide to setting up and operating such telescopes. It's a great book in lots of other ways too.

If this is your telescope:

then this manual might be helpful:

If the Fotar instruction manual is unclear, they probably don't have anything better online. You might be able to get some help here if you ask more specific questions, but your best option is to find someone who knows telescopes to help you in person. If there's an astronomy club near you, they can help. http://www.skyandtelescope.com can find your nearest club if you're in the US.

There's a generic telescope guide here: http://www.btow.com.au/pdf/tips/how%20to%20use%20your%20telescope.pdf
