I used to live in Scotland where us English are seen as not quite whole on account of our lack of National Dress.
I was amazed as it seemed like a blessing in disguise not to have one of those silly costumes people run around in every time they want to get full of themselves.

Ahhh, men in bowler hats and women in black leather cat suits; just like Mrs Peel in the Avengers.

Well, fukdis, it may be the lack of a button that robs us all of confidence in such matters.
"man with no button shuffels only with warm ankles"

Why should it matter what the Scots think? Their men wear skirts!
Edit: Thank you for the thumbs down! I just love being able to express my opinion freely.

National costumes, and other forms of group or national identity do "what it says on the tin" - they give a sense of identity. no secret there.....
Kenya unveiled their first national dress in 2004 :
"We have always wished that one day we can be identified, but not only by our faces and language, but by our dress as well - that's a common denominator that can bring us together," said National Heritage Minister Najib Balala at the time.
I couldn't put it better - that's exactly how it works.
It strikes me that morris dancers aside, England suffers a little from a lack of identity ... John Major's sense of Englishness - warm beer, cricket etc., doesn't quite cut it..
Since you neither have nor desire a national costume ... why should it matter to you that other nationalities are proud of theirs or are you actually feeling left out of the fun?? Why bring it up otherwise?

I'm not sure which point your making...
A lot of English men get married in kilts..and why not. All men suit the kilt..
The Scots have a strong identity, we know who we are, so it makes it easy for our men to wear 'skirts'...and tartan is worn all over the world, amazing eh!! : )

Shouldn't that be "we" English? As for national dress, many countries don't have such a thing. It's not even a consideration, as far as this American is concerned.

Andy you are jealous of the Scottish man
who can wear a kilt. I have just consulted my crystal ball and I see you as a wee man with bow legs and no botton.
That is the reason behind your jealousy my crystal ball has never let me down.

I live in Canada and we don't have a national outfit either. For those that do and can wear them proudly - all power too them.
