it depends how bad the hurricane is and that determines how fast it moves, like hurricane dean is moving at 25mph and its a category four, so it could last for like 2 hours in jamaica, this is hard to say because it also depends how big the area is

Well typically they can last anywhere from 4 hours to as much as 12-20 hours. But to determine exactly how long the winds and rains of a hurricane last over an area, would depend on how fast the hurricane is moving. Like for example, Hurricane Dean as it approached Jamaica started to dump rain 4-5 hours before landfall, but the winds lasted a total of 12-16 hours, and the rain lasted 12-14 hours. And it was moving at 23 mph. So it all depends on how fast the hurricane is moving.
Hope that answers your question.

We can not say.It depends upon the intensity of the hurricane and the place which is hit, whether it is over land or over sea as an island. Some cyclones(similar to hurricanes) in the Indian ocean were found lingering around the Indian shore for days together without entering the land. But once they enter the land, they move fast and gradually weaken.Sometimes, before getting completely weakened, if it crosses the land area(which is 300 to 500 Kms wide) and emerges on the other side where a sea area is cncountered, it may again strengthern.

It depends on the individual storm - how big it is, how intense it is, how fast or slow it's moving, what other weather systems are close by that might affect its movement (like a ridge of high pressure), etc. It could be a matter of hours or a matter of days. When Georges hit us here in south MS in 1998, although it had been downgraded to tropical storm status when it hit, it sat on top of us for about 2 days. Many people would have been spared flood damage had it not stalled - it wasn't surge, it was the amount of rain.

The length of time varies with the forward speed of the storm. If the storm is moving quickly, it won't have enough time to dump as much rain & be windy over the affected area. If the storm's forward motion is slower, it will have more time to rain and be windy over the affected area.

Bad weather starts about 12 hours before and lasts for about 6-8 hours after.
