Is a Ph.D. a higher degree than an Ed.D. or are they equivalent?

Both degrees are considered to be doctoral level, but the PhD is more prestigious because it is a research degree, the Ed.D is more of a practitioner degree. EdD program requirements aren't as rigorous as the PhD. For example, in the former a project is often sufficient as the culminating paper, while the latter requires original research and a dissertation.

They are both doctorates.
