My son has a 2000 Cougar, the knob for the fan has settings 1 thru 4. It works fine on 4 but does not blow at all in 1 thru 3. Before I take off the dash cover is there any other suggestions on where to look?

I think of supercharger when someone says ''blower''...
I think vista is right. if the fuse were gone-- no fan at all.

The a/c blower is based upon the contour a/c system and the weakest link always was and still has been that blower motor resistor... It's white plastic on the passenger side under the dash, near the center right kick panel attached to the a/c case itself with 4 wires going to it with one bolt holding it in. My guess is the connector to it will have the wires melted back a bit or the connector won't come off of the resistor itself.

Fix is usually replace the resistor and install a connector kit from Ford that was used in a recall for Contours that used a heavier gauge wire at the end near the resistor itself.

I don't have the numbers handy, but a Ford parts department guy whos been there a while will probably know what I'm talking about .

The switches were known to burn on some models also where it would melt the connector and switch... Usually I replace the switch and connector also in a pair with the resistor due to my dislike of Ford of Europe's idea of undersizing critical wires.

If the resistor ain't burnt, you may want to pull and see if the connector on the switch ain't burnt.

It is NOT the switch. There is virtually no chance of that or the fuse being the problem.

This is a standard problem on the New Edge Cougars (99-02 model).

Unfortuantely I cant remember the culprit for certain (I think the tech who said the resistor is right though) as its been awhile since I had to replace this, but its not too hard to change once youre rooting around near in the firewall.

Best bet, go to www.teamneco.com or www.newcougar.org and ask or search for this. You'll have it answered in detail with the cheapest place to buy the part and exactly how to fix it yourself in less than 20 minutes.

That is your best resource for that car-Yahoo answers is a very bad idea.

your resister is out - that is not an expensive part and easy to replace. the resistor will be located in one of two places - under the hood on the passenger side or in the middle there will be a four or five wire plug in next or around the blower motor - if not there it will be on the passenger side near the blower motor- good luck

It could be the switch, but usually when the switch goes bad, nothing works. More likely it will be the resister pack that allows it to run at slower speeds by putting a resister in the circuit. That box is mounted inside the heater box where it will be in the air stream, usually on top, and hard to get to.

Unless you are very confident do it yourself type, I'd let the mechanic handle it.

The switch itself. The switch on the dash that changes in between speeds 1 through 4. It sounds as if that switch has went bad. Thats where i would start.

I have the exact same problem in my kia. Everyone kept telling me that it is in the switch. The switch is not the problem in my case. I took it apart, and there are no resistors or anything in it, it just switches ground to 4 different wires. I am thinking that my problem is in the motor, but I haven't had time to check it out yet.

Check the wires while you turn the switch, if a different one powers up or goes to ground on each setting, the switch is fine.

Yeah those switches I don't know what happen to those things they awful and have seen a bunch of them go bad , ago ahead and Remove the switch and replace then you should be OK hope this helps.

check the blower motor resistor. normally located in the blower motor "box".
