If you want a reliable car that you can get alot of miles out of it before it breaks down then go foreign. I hate to break this news to every one but most of the shadetree and educated mechanics out here know what I am talking about. Pontiacs and anything domestic are good reliable cars as long as you have some basic knowledge of how to fix things.

I have owned 3 pontiacs, 2 where grand prix's and 1 a grand am. The 97 and up grand prixs have very reliable engines. The 3800 Series 2 are awesome. However, the downfall is the transmissions and electrical systems in these cars. I have had to replace two transmissions in my 97 Grand Prix which are the 4t60E. They were weaker and not very good. And this was done prior to 150,000 miles. I also had to replace and ignition switch, a blower motor resistor and a fuel pump relay in these cars. Which are all notorious for going bad 97-03 grand prixs. But like I said as long as you know how to fix things then these are just normal maintenance repairs.

The bad part is the wheel hubs. They are non greasable and are designed to be a throw away item. After about 100,000 miles these things need to be checked regularly for abnormal wear.

Other than that they are fun, sporty cars to drive that get decent but not great fuel mileage.

A Grand Prix is a great choice for a reliable long lasting car. As long as you purchase a 1997 model or newer with a 3.8 liter 3800 Series II( or Series III in 2004 and newer models) you will not be let down, make sure you get your oil changes and regular maintanence on time and it will last well over 200,000 miles.
