Porridge was served every day of the year as breakfast for prisoners, no choices, and therefore to be in prison was "doing porridge"

I think it has to do with the fact that the inmates were allegedly only fed on porridge & dry bread.

Thats what i was told as i was growing up anyway. :-)

I thought it was obvious! Prisoners eat nothing but cold lumpy porridge - and so they should. Why should good taxpayers fork out for three-course meals for load of criminal scum?
But we have to anyway.
