It seems the days of elaborate and extravagant album artwork that graced albums like 'Sgt Pepper's', or even symbolism such as from the cover of 'Dark Side of the Moon' have been replaced by and large by headshots and promo shots of the musicians themselves.

Is album art gone for good?

I thought Beck's recent "create your own album cover" thing was very cool and inventive.

apparently adequate, bands do no longer continually arise with their very own artwork. Hipgnosis became a British artwork layout team that made different the main commonly used album covers of all time: fourteen of crimson Floyd's albums consisting of darkish area of the Moon, 5 Led Zeppelin albums and intensely some extra. The artist Alex gray has additionally achieved some dazzling artwork for some gadget album covers to boot as Nirvana's In Utero.

Yep, sad to say. It was the one thing it had and always will have over cds. You can't obviously but much art with any kind of detail in such a small area. I miss all the gimmicky stuff too, like the zipper pants by Andy Warhol on the Stones Sticky Fingers, etc.

I don't think so. Most metal bands and any self respecting rock band will use some form artwork on their albums. I just hope that the digital age, such as downloads and mp3 players, doesn't kill it off cos that would be a shame.

It might be. I am thinking about some of my favorite bands of the moment. All I seem to recall on many of my CD's is a lot of black. I don't recall Trent ever doing much as far as cover art. AFI has had some groovy cartoons most of time, although they faded to black on Sing the Sorrow. Maybe not gone for good, but certainly there is a lot less of it.

For the most part...certainly in the Top 40 "musicians". Bands like The Mars Volta are keeping it alive though, the cover art for Frances the Mute was insane.

For good? No, it only feels that way since bubblegum pop/punk rock bands are overwhelming the masses these days.

It's those artificial "bands" that seem to have the headshots on their covers because they want to attract listeners with their cool fashion sense since their music is lacking so much.

Largely... since only a handful of folks are pressing LPs, and since you cannot really see intricate album art on a little CD booklet, there is little point in putting a CD in cool packaging.

You think it's dead now, just wait until downloads become the normal means by which music is bought and sold.

Sadly, it only seems to exist in metal or progressive rock nowdays. God, I miss going to the store and shuffling through the vinyl racks and looking at the Iron Maiden and Kiss album covers.

It is true that most album art these days are pretty boring but i wouldn't say its dead! Take a look at Mika's album or K-Os's Exit... I'd say it's endangered.

I don't think so...well maybe for mainstream pop **** (probably so that next year when there's a new fad people will still remember what they look like). But not for the good stuff. :)
