5/x=0.4/1
so 0.4x=5

height of the tree = 5/.4 = 12.5 meters

This is a proportion question. The ratio of the height of each item to its shadow length is the same. So 1 meter/0.4 meter = X / 5 meter.
Solve for X.

You can find this using ratios: 1 is to .4 as what is to 5?

1 / .4 = x / 5
5(1/.4) = 5x/5
5/.4 = x
12.5 = x
so the tree is 12.5 meters high.

Ratio
1/.4=x/5
cross multiply
5=.4x
x=12.5 meters

This is a problem of similar triangles. In similar triangles (where the angles are equivalent in both), Height/length is always the same. Try it - 1m/1m = 2m/2m = 3m/3m; likewise, 2m/1m = 4/2m = 6m/3m, and so on. Here's how you solve it buddy:

1 meter-high is to 0.4 meters-long
as
x meters-high is to 5 meters-long

x*0.4 = 1*5 => x = 1*5/0.4 = 12.5 meters

You get the equation above by what I call "the rule of x". Cross both sides so x is multiplied by 0.4, 1m multiplied by 5m, and set them on different sides of the equation.
