Angelica,
Let me try to make you understand this:
Well we are talking here about graphical coordinates and such.
so (0,0) is our origin and then we can draw all kinds of lines that are described by a function y=f(x). i.e. if x=4 then y=? and if x=17 then y=?.
The slope of a line (or of a function) is seen on the graph as the steepness of the diagonal line drawn by the function y=f(x).
the steeper it shows implies that the slope has a higher value.
A slope can be any value in the world, negative or positive. A slope of zero means that the line is straight and parallel to the x-axis, a positive slope means that your line goes "uphill" when looked at from left to right (that's how you should always look at it), and "downhill" will imply a negative slope.
A slope of 1 is a perfect 45degree diagonal going uphill. get what a slope is?
Now math:
the slope is the ratio of the growth of y relative to the growth of x.
so for y=x the slope is exactly 1 and it remains 1 for y=x+5. why? - because even with the addition of 5, y still grows evenly with x - do you see it? (it's not like when x=10 then y=500 or something) y is steady, and always 5 above x - get it?
If we had y=2x then the story is different, because y would be TWICE as x, so for x=10 -> y=20 (a difference of 10), but for x=500 -> y=1000 (a difference of 500 - see?) so y here is twice as x and yes the slope is 2.
Now let's move to points: the task we are given here is to find the slope if some.one gives us 2 points anywhere on the graph.
So for a start, draw the points and stretch a line between them and look at your line. Is it going uphill? downhill? is it steep? That should already get you some idea of what the answer is!!
Now here is something that will help you: draw a horizontal line from one of the points and a vertical line from the other (doesn't matter which) and form a triangle with a 90degree angle.
The slope is exactly the length of the vertical edge of the triangle divided by the length of the horizontal edge of the triangle - that's exactly what they want you to do!!! Now did you notice that the length of the horizontal edge is the absolute value of (x2-x1)? (os if you get for example -3 -> make it a 3). And the height of the vertical edge is the absolute value of y2-y1 ?
So????
To calculate a slope for a given 2 points (x1,y1) and (x2, y2) all you do is abs(y2-y1) / abs(x2-x1) - THAT IS ALL!!!
GOOD LUCK.

the slope is the difference in the Y values divided by the difference in the X values. Picture a line from 0,0 to 1,2 the slope is 2 because 2-0/1-0 = 2 You can see that the slope is two because for every one unit X increases, Y increases 2 units.

P(3,-2) Q(1,4) so 4-(-2)/1-3 = 6/(-2) = -3
you can switch them around and get (-2)-4/3-1 = -6/2 = -3

for the next one you should get -3/2

Angelica, the important thing is that the numbers for each point are coordinates of the point in x,y order. For any two points that form a line, the slope is = yQ-yP / xQ-xP. For the first set
slope = [4 - (-2)]/[1-3]= 6/-2 = -3.

slope = change in Y/change in X

so all you need to do is take the difference in Y coordinates and divide by the difference in X coordinates.

for your first example:

(4-(-2))/(1-3) = 6/-2 = -3

hey.... ok first of all the #'s are ordered in (x1,y1) (x2,y2) form then the formula for slope is (slope=y2 - y1/x2 - x1).......then jus plug in the #'s!!!!!

HOPE THAT HELPS
