If we really have a separation of church and state, why should law breakers be given free sanctuary inside a church. If the church is deliberately holding criminals (illegal immigrants), shouldn't the church officials (priests) be subject to arrest for giving safe harbor to people who break the law? What do you people think?

For one thing, you're not giving safe harbor to a criminal unless you're concealing him from the police or physically trying to keep them from arresting him. Unless a clergyman lies to the cops when they ask about the suspect's whereabouts, or tries to lock the doors when they decide to execute a warrant I don't see how this applies. Allowing "sanctuary" is just a tradition rather than a law, and the police do it out of respect for the community. Warrant or no warrant, if a bunch of armed men go into a sacred place where any sort of violence is forbidden you're going to piss lot of people off. Throughout history churches have often protected individuals who were being wrongly persecuted by the civil government so just allowing the cops to barge into one might be an unwise political move. But sooner or later the suspect will have no choice but to come out of there and surrender anyway since he can't live in the church forever and there's no way he can escape.

There is no good reason why a law breaker is able to find sanctuary in a church...and yes, the priests should be arrested.

and the churches should have to pay taxes too...

It's a tradition of sanctuary. Look it up on the same computer you're using to ask rhetorical and/or ambiguous questions with. Personally, I could care less about the distraction of Immigration. Fact is, as the law is today, illegals are to be fined $5,000.00 and deported when caught. Sounds like Bush's "charge 'em $5,000.00 to go to the back of the line" immigration strategy, huh? Read the Immigration Law and you'll see that the only thing lacking is ENFORCEMENT.

When you have both small business and big corp.'s crying foul over being fined for employing illegal immigrant labor, AND CRY FOUL when tyhe minimum wage is increased, which direction are you supposed to go?

Immigration, like abortion, drugs, crime, war, economics, entertainment, etc... ARE DISTRACTIONS, NOTHING MORE. If a person comes into this country illegally, but BEING AN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT is their ONLY CRIME, then by all means, Welcome to the US. We shoud strip violent criminals, muderers and rapists of their citizenship, and give it to hard working immigrants. Then we need to simply DEPORT all Illegal Immigrants currently incarcerated, re-write our laws to allow Deportation and Confinements in their home country for their Crime here.

Again, while Immigration is flawed, it's being used to DISTRACT us from the real atrocities of the USG/PTB.

interior the previous, the government has stayed out of religious concerns, like offering sanctuary. there is each from time to time a conflict between church and state, and so a palms off recommendations-set has frequently worked. Technically, a church can grant to guard somebody. even nevertheless, quicker or later this individual will could desire to pass away the construction, and as quickly as she steps out of the doorways, she would be detained. actually, actual exterior the door. This turns into an extremely sticky subject. in my opinion, i do no longer think of that the churches ought to be harboring unlawful extraterrestrial beings. yet, it incredibly is a loophole which would be utilized. on the different hand, i do no longer choose to make certain churches forbidden from sanctuary thoroughly, because of fact there are uncommon cases whilst it incredibly is mandatory till circumstances could be worked out (no longer unavoidably immigration matters, yet issues that should contain courses like the witness risk-free practices application). i do no longer choose to make certain the government regulating faith in our us of a.

As far as I know, this criminal sanctuary happened quite a long time ago.

In England they had to be able to recite some document in order to stay within the Church.

For centuries, the churches have had a principle of protecting people they believe the state unwisely is attacking.

For example, during WW II, churches saved many Jews from the concentration camps, and helped many allied escape from POW camps.

I don't know. I am dumbfounded as to why cops think they can't barge right in, shove the priest out of the way, backhand a couple of nuns and arrest the lawbreaker holed up in the church.

Actually that would be the ultimate in separation of church and state.

Churches can give temporary asylum. Since church's don't have the facilities for long term housing, it isn't permanent. I fail to see how this is a problem.

The curch is a sanctuary, even for criminals. If criminals can't find forgiveness in the house of god. Where can they find it? Prison? >.<
