Maybe. First you check other factors aren't causing the fish's preference for that spot.

We're humans; we have a knack for taking a behavior or pattern and getting the underlying emotion underneath. We instantly recognize when someone is sad, happy, angry, frustrated - even if they're not specifically smiling or crying. We take our clues from patterns of behavior.

But here, we have to recognize two things: (1) our assumptions are often wrong in other people; (2) our assumptions are based on patterns of HUMAN behavior - not reptile, or fish, avian behavior.

Yes, the behavior of the fish is striking. But, here we have to stop and realize we're taking our innate ability to see emotion in others, but instead applying to things that are not human and behave differently.

Sorry to say this, but your fish isn't mourning. The goldfish has died because it's obvious that the tank has bad water quality. When was the last time you did a water change? He's stressed from the water, not the fish. He's looking sick. Can I recommend a water change and some aquarium salt?

Oh the poor little guy I hope he gets another fish for him. I believe they have feelings a couple of days ago (I have 2 guppies) I put my pregnant guppy into a breeders net since she is pregnant than both of my guppies started to panic they were swimming together the breeders net trying to get to each other! So I let her out and then immediately they swam right to each other and swam side by side! It was amazing I did not know they were so close to each other!
