I think the point is they don't want to waste calories on soda. Some people loose weight by just switching to diet sodas or not drinking them at all. Hey anyway you can cut back helps. Even the little things can help. Also some people just prefer the taste. I know when I went on a diet thats all I would get and now thats what I usually drink, diet or not.

Some people drink diet sodas in an effort to cut back on the sugar consumption that they take in. Not necessarily as a diet aid. I know that it may seem pointless to some, but if I was concerned about my sugar intake, I would switch to diet sodas. It's one of those things that you CAN control. And they may be thinking that it may be a small effort, but, nonetheless an effort to be made.
Some people like the taste od diet soda over sugared sodas too. If I have been drinking diets ones for a while and then I switch to one with sugar, it tastes awful! I have to get used to it all over again.

It's a psychological thing people do for themselves...they figure if they're making at least some forward momentum progress in their goals then they're on the right track & better habits will soon develop as a result...while this is technically true it usually does'nt happen this way because the person lacks the willpower they need and the support they should be getting! The result...fat people drinking diet sodas with their ultimate southwestern bacon ranch chipotle sourdough supreme cheese cheeseburgers! The world has gone mad I tell you! MAD!!!

I agree. like people buying salads and overloading it with dressing thinking that it's better for them than a burger. or people that eat a whole bag of those Quaker rice cake snacks because they're low fat...
And diet cola is worse for you than regular soda because of all the artificial sweetener. most diet colas have aspartine in them, which is the worst kind of artificial sweetener. there have actually been articles and studies done about how this chemical can lead to cancer in regular diet soda drinkers (but only people who drink like 7 diet sodas a day) People need to understand that soda in general is unhealthy, and that there's no "health soda" out there, except maybe club soda...

By drinking diet soda, it free's up a little calorie leeway to eat garbage. If you drink a lot of pop, like 4-5 cans a day, that could be about 600 calories or more, by switching to diet, that helps a little.

Yes it basically does cancel the diet soda thing and it just depends on how much intake of sweets that the person eats I guess...good point though.

Yes it does rather defeat the whole point of diet drinks. However, I personally prefer the taste of the diet options so I'm not trying to be healthy, just purchasing what I like.

Some people genuinely like the taste of diet drinks. My girlfriend will pig out on pizza and hot wings and then has a diet coke. She doesn't do it to be healthy, she says she likes the taste. I don't like the taste of diet drinks personally.

I don't drink diet soda because I am on a diet but because I think it tastes better.
