A true phobia is an irrational fear. It really gets down to whether you believe nature or nurture is the sole contributing fact to our characteristics. If you believe in the nature theory, then our phobias are inborn. However, under the nurture theory, our environment would have made us fearful of certain things for certain reasons. But, as I said before, a phobia is supposed to be an irrational fear, so if it stemmed from a specific traumatizing event, or sequence of events, then it could be rationalized. This would then negate the true definition of a phobia.

Phobias are not a choice. We can obtain phobias at any age, but can also loose them.
It is something that an individual comes to fear from a bad experience or even something as little as something someone ELSE saying a frighting thing.

I have a phobia of bees/wasp tot he point I will scream, run, and panic at the sight of one- yet I've never been stung to actually feel the pain.

Phobias are fears that we have let into our rational minds and they are irrational fears when we face them. The best thing is to face them directly, honestly , and with the conviction that for every fear there is a rational solution so we may overcome them and become better people for it

They do choose us...it is not left free for our selection...anything which our mind believes and starts to fear about it becomes a Phobia...so it is not our choice...

All fears are related, because we all have the same fear.

Every single fear or phobia that anyone has ever had is somehow and in some way, just another fear of dying.

afraid of spiders? your subconscious (for whatever reason) thinks that it will lead to death. Same with fear of heights, fear of water, fear of the dark, being alone....everything.

Its all a subconscious way to avoid your mortality.

Neither...I think they are passed down to us. Fears I have are some of the same as my parents...why? Because I saw them fear these things when I was a child so I thought these were things I needed to fear. I didn't choose to be afraid, it just happened.
