well...i've never heard that but i think that if you yell "fire" then everybody will run away from you. if you yell something like "help" or "rape" then somebody might come help you. just an opinion.

Because of what a word entails. If you yell fire what you are saying is that there is help needed urgently and that anybody can help. When you yell rape, it entails confrontation. It means that somebody is being attacked and the only way to disuade such an attack may mean confronting another person. This can lead to physical harm. Also, you go into leagal and morals of helping. If you yell rape and someone shows up that person has to make a decision on whether or not a rape is truly happening or is it just a ploy by the person to get attention or to get another person in trouble.

It is simple psycology. You yell rape and the person that hears it thinks to itself, oh that could be dangerous and a lot of work and trouble I better stay out of it. Its sad but it is true.

We live in a very impersonal world right now. There have been cases in the pst where people got killed or raped in front of other people and nobody did anything, they just stood there.

So the police and psychologists have come up with a way to mek it meaningful and personal to other people. If there is a fire there is a chance that ot might spread and damage the surrounding areas or cause injury to you , that's the reason people around would rush in to help. Of you yell rape, no one will come to help as it's not their problem.

Nobody ever said to yell fire! Besides, yelling RAPE is a lot easier than yelling SOMEONES TRYING TO RAPE ME

This is a good question. I guess when I think about it both sides have their pros and cons.
Fire:
Pro- It gets the attention of many people
Con-Those people are probably less likely to notice you because everyone knows people put themselves first. Also It clears the area to the point where no one will be around to help you.

I'm being raped:
Pro: People will understand the situation immediatetly and are more likely to notice and help you.
Con- They may fear for their safety and not help you out or even may not know what to do.

Its a very good question and I dont think their is one way that will work out perfect. It may depend on the time and place of the incident to.

Because, sadly, many people just look the other way when someone is being assaulted, whether it is rape or just being beaten up, because they don't want to get involved. But everyone pays attention when you yell "fire", because fire can spread to where they are, so they consider it their business.

Most people will probably respond quicker to a fire call I suppose? My advice wouldnt be to scream as loudly as possible in the rapist ear if you can and keep on fighting like a maniac. My second bit of advice is to claw and scratch so you can get some dna under your fingernails. It may not save your life but it may help to catch the barsterd oneday.

You need to yell "Fire" because that directly involves other people's lives and they are apt to check it out at least...if you yell 'rape' or 'help' people are going to stay watching their TV's or whatever because they don't want to get "involved" and possibly get hurt themselves....AND that is what society has become today

Because more people will respond to the word fire, plus it takes too long and its harder to spit out a whole sentence SOMEBODIES TRYING TO RAPE ME compared to the simple form FIRE.

Sadly, people are more likely to call 911 (or "999", depending where you are) if you shout "Fire!" than they are if you shout "Rape!"...

My advice is to carry pepper spray and a large pair of scissors...you may perish in the effort, but at least you will prevent your attacker hurting anyone else!
