When he was born, his parents were living in North Arlington, New Jersey, just outside New York City. When he was 4, they moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan. I think one of his parents was originally from that region. One set of grandparents still lived in North Jersey, and were his connection to Yankee fandom even though he lived about halfway between Chicago and Detroit. But until he became a professional baseball player, he'd lived most of his life in Kalamazoo.
