I've been driving Chevys for about 35 years. Ive had a couple GMCs as well. Also many other makes of pickups over the years, and I prefer General Motors cars and trucks over the others.. What is the real difference between Chev & GMC ? Is it just the trim and emblem package ?? Many years back I had a 60's GMC 3/4 ton truck with a V-6, and I remember that being the heaviest gas engine I'd seen at the time, heavier that the 327 which was around in big numbers then. I also seem to remember the older GMCs being more utilitarian with the interiors than Chevy, but in recent years I really don't see much difference. If they're the same, why does General Motors have both lines, if different, how so ? Do any of you have a good answer for this? I'm figuring on purchasing a nearly new Chevy Tahoe or GMC Yukon this fall or in the spring.

The two trucks are exactly the same except for the trim, logos, and some minor differences in the way their options are put together in the interior. These two trucks are assembled in the same factories, so they can't be very different. They use two separate lines to give the impression of more choice and internal competition between Chev and GMC as they are two separate divisions inside the GM umbrella. Kinda dumb, but that's the way it is.

I don't have all the answers just what I've experienced with my 18 Chevy pickups and 1 GMC. First off there was a GMC V-6, 305 cu.in. based on the 348/409 block for the know it all that insists it was an inline. When I bought a 2003 GMC with the Duramax diesel I was told that the GMC's were built in Canada and that there was 2 layers of sound insulation under the hood and on the firewall making that 330 hp diesel virtually silent to the occupants. There were some other differences I've learned over the years as I thought it was same door different day thing for the two makes for a long time but that wasn't the case.

As you stated, there WAS a time when the GMC was a heavier duty truck than a Chevy. When Chevy went to coil rear springs, the GMC's still had leafs etc etc.

Today, they are identical except for the badges.

They are both owned by GM,same thing just the looks, Me Chevrolet Trailblazer and GMC Envoy Denali. same engine and parts but different looks. But buy the Chevy cheaper and i like the new Tahoe better then the Yukon, the Yukon to expensive because of the name and the "extra stuff" (which you can get in both)

GMC is more luxury. Chevy is just a standard truck. Both have the same parts, except GMC you can get nicer interior choices. GMC will cost more, so if you don't want a fancy SUV, buy the Chevy.

That was one of their stand out points was having that V- 6, I think it was a large displacement engine.
