I can't think why.

He had already approached the Spanish (and the Portuguese) for funding and they had turned him down. The Spanish felt that Colombus had already found the passage to Asia, so were not interested in Cabot.

So why would they want to kill him when all he had done was discover what he also thought was Asia?
