Ok im 37 weeks pregnant and this is my first, so I pretty clueless on alot of things. Last night I went to the bathroom and my shirt was wet. I was lactating. I thought you start lactating when the baby is born? Does this mean anything? I know this is a pretty silly question, but I was just wondering.

Actually your breasts start leaking colustrum (or pre-milk) way before you give birth. Your body is just getting ready. You won't produce regular or "real" breastmilk until a few days after the birth.

You can wear nursing pads right now to soak up the little bit that is leaking out.

Since you are 37 wks along, what you are having is general leakage from the nipples, your body is preparing for the baby by producing pre-lactation. This is normal for women to go through within the last month or so of pregnancy. This happened to me with my two pregnancies, so I have experience to pass on... Advice to you- buy protective disposable pads for your breasts in the infant or health and beauty section of your local store, these will soak up the pre-lactation so that you will not be embarrased by the "wet look". Use these pads after you give birth and if you plan to nurse too. Good luck!

you're lactating for a reason, your breasts are matured milk wise and ready to breast feed...it is a little odd but not rare.

If they have been massaged a lot recently, that too may promote early lactation

You are supposed to start lactating before & after your baby is born, its your body getting ready.

It only means your body is ready to nurse your baby. Many women lactate before giving birth. Look at it as a good thing, as soon as the baby is born you can give him/her the best start at life.........Good luck

No, it is very normal. Your body is preparing to have the baby. The glands are ready. You have actually been lacting for a while. If you squeeze your nipple, you will see milk (colatrum) come out of the nipple. Congrats on the baby, and good luck. Don't feel like it is a silly question either. Being a new mom, leaves alot of questions, we have all gone through it

Not a silly question at all. I am 24 weeks pregnant and I started secreting colostrum yesterday. It is perfectly normal. It just means your body is getting ready for you to feed your baby when he/she arrives.

All the best and don't worry to much :)

Oh, no, you can definitely start lactating before birth (I did also). They make these pad things (you can get at Wal-Mart or just about anywhere) that fit into your bra...they come in handy :)

It is called Colostrum. It is the "before" milk. It can begin prior to birth (a lot of women tend to begin leaking). Then by about 3 days after you give birth your colostrum will change to milk and your breast will get full.

Begin wearing breast pads - it will help with leakage.
