Spirulina, a form of "pond scum" is one of the oldest organisms on earth. It is a remarkably good source of protein and many other nutrients but strangely, is totally devoid of Vitamin C.

I've been using Spirulina for a few years now. I first started taking it when I was breastfeeding because I felt so tired and I found that it helped to give me energy.

I stopped taking it for awhile because I started to question whether it was actually helping. Then around 6 weeks later I couldn't work out why I was so tired all the time. I remembered that I'd stopped taking spirulina and put it down to that. I began taking it again and haven't stopped.

It comes from the Pacific Islands

Spirulina is a nutrient dense alkaline superfood. It is nature's richest whole-food source of beta-carotene (25 times richer than raw carrots); Gamma Linolenic Acid (3 times richer in GLA than evening primrose oil); Vitamin E (3 times richer than raw wheat germ); Spirulina is also nature's richest whole-food source of complete protein: Spirulina - 60-70% compared to Soybeans - 30-35% and Beef - 18-22%, and has 200-600% more B12 than its nearest rival raw beef liver. It is also very rich in Chlorophyll a natural cleanser and deodorizer. Spirulina is a rich whole-food source of antioxidants contains a spectrum of every known natural antioxidant, and the only known source of phycocyanin a protein that is known to inhibit cancer. It is an ideal complement to Chlorella.

Spirulina is popular as a part of an alkalising detox diet and as a natural alternative to vitamin supplements and to easily increase the amount of raw green foods in the diet. Because of its detoxifying and cleansing action it is often used to improve bad breath (halitosis), body odour, digestion and elimination problems.

Because of its nutritional value and high quality protein content, including Phenylalanine, a precursor of a substance found in the appetite control centre of the brain, Spirulina is also popular as part of a calorie controlled diet.

And, it is actually sold by a shop in my home town !!
