Anyone know anything about looking after a bonsai tree? We keep it inside, as instructed, but it's still wilting! We can't work out if we're watering it too much or too little!

Help!

Depends on what kind of plant it is. I put all of mine outside for the summer, they do much better outside than in. Depending on the plant, some are in shade under trees, some are in full sun (morning sun, not afternoon sun). The tropical ones like ficus come inside to overwinter. The ones like junipers and maples stay outside, albeit in a somewhat protected spot.

Very few bonsai actually enjoy being inside. The light is poor and the air is dry. I would recommend you find a nice light shade spot outside where you can put it for the rest of the summer, water it every day, feed it weekly, the appropriately overwinter it.

1. Google or Yahoo "Search box" is the place where you can learn how to treat a Bonsai tree correctly.

2. From a nursery/large garden shop/K-Mart purchase a moisture meter. This will cost you around $5. This little instrument with its long stem is poked into soil of any of your houseplants and tells you immediately of how moist/wet/dry the soil is. Then you can determine correctly when and how much to water your plant.

I have a moisture meter for 30 years already, and it still works well. After checking for moisture in any given pot, dry off wand and store. Doing this every time, you will have this little helper for a long to come. Keep away from children as this is not a toy. The very thin wire on the inside of the stem can break or rust easily.

Good luck with your Bonsai tree.
