Yes i would reccomend buying it. to be exact you should get 1-1.5 lbs per gallon It has the beneficial bacteria in it to help start you nitrogen cycle and it has some add bonus's. the rock itself isnt really alive but it has many different things that may be already living in it. For example you may find all different types of inverts, corals, and many other species that hitchhike their way into you system via the live rock. The only downside is there may be some species in it that can be considered parasitic and harm your tank but, most things that are living in it are harmless and actually beneficial to your sytem. Some examples are certain types of worms that will live in the sand bed and stir it up keeping the sand bed airated. So in my opinion i wouldnt do a marine tank without live rock.

Live rock is probably the best place to grow beneficial bacteria for your nitrogen cycle.
It has way more surface area than most other filters and is also an excellent place for pods and other small critters to hide and multiply (Food and cleaners).
Live rock also helps to stableize your ph.
I personally use live rock, live sand and PLENTY of current as my ONLY biological filter.
I add snails, hermits, seastars and a couple of different cleaner shrimp for (mechanical) filtration.
I use a protien skimmer to remove disolved organic material.
You Can't go wrong using live rock.
