During mitosis, sister chromatids (halves of chromosomes) are separated and lined up on opposite sides of the cell before being duplicated.

During metaphase chromosomes align along the metaphase (equatorial) plate and then are separated by the kinetochore microtubules in Anaphase to go to opposite poles of the cell prior to cytokinesis (cytoplasm separates into the two distinct cells.)
