Gravel, a pump, a filter, an aquarium with a lid, something to remove chlorine from the water (pet stores sell chemicals that do this), aquarium salt (even freshwater tanks need a little bit of salt. The box will tell you how much to use.), aquarium decorations, a light for the tank, a net, an algae scrubber for the side of the tank, a gravel vacuum, and fish!

Filter
tank
gravel
rocks or plants to create hiding spots for the fish
heater
thermometer
water test kit (pH Ammonia Nitirite Nitrate)
cleaning supplies like a sponge and vaccum gravel syphon
Hood with light
possibly an airpump with an airstone.
dechlorinator product that removes chlorine and chloramines from the water
That should be a good list to get you going and you should read up on the nitrogen cycle here is a good website that explains it very well.

I know this is a saltwater aquarium site but the nitrogen cycle works the same in freshwater as it does in saltwater.

First and formost, A BOOK!
The rest of what you need will become clear when you research and learn about the fish BEFORE setting up your first tank.
