I've used the same moving company twice and have recommended them to everyone i know who is moving. Here are the things that impressed me about them.

First, they came out to my home 2 weeks prior to the move. We went room by room to go over everything with the guy asking me if we would be packing the mirrors, glass drawers, etc. He noted everything that we would be doing and what I wanted them to do. We then went over the time for arrival and where everything was going. He recommended the number of people for the job and the size truck.

We then went to the contract portion of the discussion. He gave me the price per hour for every hour worked. He also stated that there was 1/2 hour prior to and after the ending time added to the bill. This was to cover travel time for the crew. He went on further to explain that the charged for packing items (per item cost) if there was unexpected packing that needed to be done the day of the move. Lastly the contract stated the estimated cost of the job and also listed the maximum amount that would be due the day of the move (payable in cash). There was a 20% overage that could be charged the day of the move if it went longer than expected. Any balance above that would be due within 30 days of the move and payable by cash, check or money order.

This was a good thing to help prevent the "kidnapping" of items that I have heard some movers do. The movers will demand so much money to take the items off the truck thus increasing the money they make. with this company, you had a contract in hand that stated the maximum amount you would owe the day of the move. nice and reassuring.

Also, with the stated dollar amount per hour you could see how things were going and help out the movers to move things along quicker.

All in all the guys were very nice and also very helpful. We bought the crew lunch and also tipped everyone $50 at the end of the day plus a case of beer.

the guys I used and recommend are Reilly & Sons Moving located in Philadelphia, PA. I think they are local only.

We used Perry Moving in Jessup, MD and were thrilled with their service and attention to detail. They are a family owned operation. They hire their own crews. We have used Mayflower and other big name movers in the past and have not been satisfied. With those companies the only person who actually works for the company is the driver. The packers and movers are often day laborers so they have no vested interest in the company. I have had things disappear. My advice is for you to check in your area for a family owned moving service and then check their references and find out if they hire employees rather than temps. It makes a difference in how your home is packed and in the care they take in handling. One of Perry's recent customers was so pleased with them they gave them a $1200 tip.
