Okay. First, in theory, your cousin is right. WD40 is a lubricant (oil based) and "clean grease" will usually break down "dirty grease". BUT, that's only 1/2 the battle.
If the original black grease is still there, you will need to use a toothbrush and OLIVE OIL to get through the WD40 and remove the original stain.
Then (also as your cousin said) you will need to use something to break down the grease. If regular dishsoap didn't work, you have a couple other options. First, try DAWN FOR POTS AND PANS. It has extra enzymes to break the bonds in the oils. If that doesn't work, you can try shampoo for oily hair, also designed to dissolve grease and oils.
After either of these 2, you have to WASH THEM IN COLD....and hang to dry. DO NOT WASH in other than cold.....DO NOT dry in dryer until you are sure the stains are out.
IF ALL ELSE FAILS....get a can of carb cleaner or brake cleaner at WalMart and spray the stain. You might have an issue if they aren't colorfast...but this would be the last resort, and a little lighter area would be better than a grease stin if nothing else has worked!
~~NOTE~~
WHEN YOU ARE USING ANY OF THE METHODS ABOVE...BE SURE TO PUT PLENTY OF WHITE PAPER TOWLS OR AN OLD WHITE TOWEL BEHIND THE STAIN TO ABSORB IT AND KEEP IT FROM TRANSFERRING TO THE OTHER SIDE. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE WITH THE CARB/BRAKE CLEANER!!
~~ONLY USE THE CARB/BRAKE CLEANER OUTSIDE IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA!!~~
GOOD LUCK!!

Scrape off the excess. Blot with a cleaning solvent. If stain remains, try these in this order...
1) Mix 1 teaspoon of mild clear dish detergent containing no alkalis or bleach, like Dawn, with 1 cup of warm water. Do not use laundry detergent!
2) Mix 1 tablespoon of household ammonia with 1/2 cup of water. Apply in a well ventilated area and never mix with bleach!
3) Mix 1/3 cup of white household vinegar and 2/3 cup of water. Apply this to stains.

Sometimes I make hot water with the coffee maker, microwave, or stove, and pour it on grease stains after putting the Dawn dish soap on the grease, and use an old toothbrush to gently scrub the spot, to try to melt the grease.
hope this helps!!!
