i asked a question about a certain style of maternity clothes because --god forbid!-- i want to keep a semblance of normality in my life & i like to dress a certain way & would like to do so during my pregnancy if i were to go out with my friends to a concert or something ( i know a lot of people in the local music & entertainment scene--was even involved for a while )
but a few people told me i needed to "grow up" and basically change my entire style because i'm going ot be a mother. what?!? WHY?! i'm basically supposed to NOT be who i AM because i'm pregnant?!!?
btw, i'm 28, married, homeowner, have a career, planned this baby and have done everything i'm supposed to during a pregnancy.
so how does a person's attire make them a "better mom"??
just curious, because i really don't get this concept.

i go out to bars to see the local bands, but in my area smoking is illegal inside all businesses & within 20ft or so from the entrance. (and of course, i don't drink any alcohol!! cranberry juice, oj, and 7up for me!)

Oh please.... This is the same concept that makes a person driving a BMW better than a person driving a ford focus. Everyone is convinced they are better than everyone else because of materials... Just wear what you want & what you're comfortable in, love your children, be a happy & positive role model, be there for them, and you already have most people in America beat on being a good parent. Good luck & congrats.

I find that there are many old fashioned women on here that can be a little rude. I haven't started really showing yet but I went to Macy's to try to find clothes that would grow with me. Luckily I found that empire waist shirts that are real long are the style now I guess. So far these have worked great! They have extra fabric around the mid section but are still very cute. I got a really sexy black one that is too low cut for me so I just put a gray tank top underneath so I don't bust out. My husband loves them and says I should keep them after the baby. Also those gaucho pants are great too. I don't know your personal style so these may not work for you but gimme an elastic waist band any day know what I mean?? :) Good Luck

What a bunch of Ignorant answers and people!!
Company's have changed maternity clothes to be more and more like regular clothes so you DON'T have to loose your style and appearance! The people that say things like you need to dress like a grandma and grow up, I can almost guarantee you they are the ones that can't fit in normal clothes and have to shop at consignment stores for 5 years ago styles.
They make short shorts now, low cut shirts, and all the latest fashions and styles are made for pregnant women now.
You can wear whatever you want! Go for it! I know I wear some AE shirts of my husbands with some jeans and I am a good mother.
Don't listen to these people, they are jealous! You enjoy your pregnancy and don't let things like that get to you. I know I don't! Congrats!

Sorry someone gave you a rough time. I dont think maternity clothes make you a mom at all....its a temporary part of your life after all. The pregnancy part, not the mom part.
Now if you are looking for clothes to go to bars and hang out in smokey clubs...well then, you have a problem. There are certain situations you should just avoid when pregnant. But you sound smart enough to know that.
All the stars dress up and go out when they are pregnant...doesnt stop them from finding classy clothes to go out in and show off their pregnant selves.
Just try not to be a Britany Spears or some Twinkie like that...nothing less attractive than a big pregnant belly hanging out of Daisy Duke shorts. Sorry...My opinion.
good luck

Hey there! I don't know how long you have tried asking or answering questions in these parenting forums, but let me tell you--there are some REALLY judgemental, holier than thous floating around in here! You'll see the same ones over and over, too. Of course clothes don't make you a better mom. You know what else doesn't-- slamming other mom's just to make yourself feel better! However, those b's just don't get it. You want to see some REAL bad stuff-- post something on here telling them you plan to work after your baby is born, or that you don't plan to breastfeed. Those really get them going. Unfortunately, there isn't anything we can do about them. Best of luck to you and your new baby!

People can only speak from what they see (until they know you better) or what they know. You know how first impressions are - they are just that - impressions and are mixed with stereotypes, etc. Parenting does require a certain degree of 'settling down', and people have a visual concept that goes with it. Clothes are just a covering - they don't dictate who you are and people who take the time to know you will understand. Underneath it all, we are all just naked people going about our lives haha.
You sound like you have it together and will be a responsible mom, so be yourself. They have so many styles of maternity clothes so you can keep your personal style. Pregnancy is beautiful and clothes can flatter it (you).

As a new mom myself, my style has NOT changed at all...ok, maybe just a little...I have to wear tops that my son can not PULL down! Enjoy your pregnancy, several of my friends never even purchased maternity clothes, they bought baby-doll type shirts and looked great. Dress anyway you want, you're an adult :) I can tell you that I bought those super high waisted maternity Capri's and they were much more comfortable than the low rise. And, boy were they funny looking, they almost go up to your breasts!

i think for a lot of people there is a preconceived notion that "goth style" or "punk style" is a youth oriented, juvenile way of dressing. So unfortunately when you ask a question like that you are opening yourself up to people's judgements and opinions. Personally I say wear what makes you comfortable and express your individuality as you see fit...just be healthy and take care of that little life growing inside of you...oh and CONGRATS on your pregnancy!!
BTW there are plenty of moms out there that dress like "moms" and they are anything but good role models...clothes don't make the mom!

I am sometimes put in the same situation. I've managed to make it through both of my pregnancies without conforming though. You should never change who you are b/c of what others think. There are stylish maternity clothes out there... I've found some good ones at OldNavy.com and just by searching on the internet for "funky" or "rock and roll" maternity clothes. They tend to be a little pricey, but worth it I think.

No, a person's attire does not make them a better mom. Those people are just lumping you into the stereotypical "bad" mothers who go out and party and get drunk every night, while their kid is home w/ a relative or sitter. That is inappropriate behaivor for a mom, b/c they have responsibilities they don't want to face, but it doesn't sound like that's you.
There's something about being pregnant, that makes ppl feel the need/right to voice their opinion to you, loudly. But, you're an adult, sometimes you'll just have to make your own decisions, and ignore criticism.....b/c you'll get it! Can't explain why....something to do w/ being pregnant/having kids, other ppl think they know what's best for your own kids!!
