Each person is born with a certian level of potential for intelligence. How close we come to our potential depends on the environment we are exposed to. For example, someone raised in a loving environment that receives a good education has a good chance of reaching their intellectual potential. If that same person were locked away with no human contact, they would have no chance to maximize their potential.

Both. A child born with limited intelligence can extend his capabilities a great deal if exposed to a supportive, creative, environment. And a child born with great intelligence can be severely limited by a restrictive, non-nurturing environment that doesn't support intellectual growth. It's the old "Nature vs Nurture" debate, and you can't limit it to one or the other because they are completely intertwined.

over they years, I have noted that 99.99% of those who are born smart are really persons for whom education and experience make an indelible imprint on their brain, and for whom one data bit blossoms into a web of inferential knowledge. The other .01% are individuals like Mozart, or Leonardo or Einstein who are literally born with a brilliance we common folk will never understand.
as for those not born smart, sadly, there is no amount of education or experience that can raise their low level of understanding of their world and the laws which govern it. we all know many who fit this profile.

I think people are born with a certain potential to be smart, but must train themselves to take advantage.
Likewise, people can be born with athletic ability, but they could lose that advantage by eating too much and sitting on their butts all day.

Hi!
None of us are stuck with the smarts we are born with. learning and experience, coupled with our response to it, can increase our smarts.
I left school aged 14 with no qualifications after being labeled ESN (Educationally Sub-Normal). Somewhere I read that people only use a small percentage of their brain. I started to use more of mine, and now have a high IQ and a very successful career.
Good wishes.

I think people are born with the potential to be smart, but it is up to them to use it.
