As far as production. Perhaps I am biased but I do not feel Kanye's style is comparable to the great Premo. What do ya think?

I hope Common didn't mean what he said. I wouldn't give Kanye that much credit.

Kanye's not on the same level. He's starting to fall after 3 years, and preemo's one of the best right now. There's no real creativity behind his sampling either.

I don't really think its a fair comparision, they have different styles. Kayne depends on samples to make the songs, Primo takes samples to add to the song. Primo can scratch like its going out of style... and you have no idea what record he is sampling. Kanye on the other hand samples from very well known artists and songs. So I give more props to Primo, but I thinks its a fair comparision because Kanye is the hottest producer out right now, as was Primo in his prime.
Plus of course Common said he found the new Primo, what rapper doesn't give props to his producer, Guru always talked about Primo in his rhymes, so yeah... its fair.

I do not think that Kanye and Premo should ever be compared. Their styles are completely different, plus Premo has a lot more years, a lot more hits under his belt than Kanye has.

Kanye calls Primo his idol. I don't think its fair to compare, because Premier is a vet who has killed it for a long time. But Kanye does his thing. Two different styles, but I think Kanye hopes he could be as raw/respected as Premier has been in hip hop.

of course not.. Kanye hasnt been doing it for as long, but his catalog is serious, dont sleep. Dont get me wrong, there are similarities, but Kanye will even tell you that he's not messin with preme like that. Kanye brought the soulful feel, while premo has had a gritty distinct basement sound for decades..

Two totally different styles, so you can't really compare them. But I would take Premier over Kanye

They're similar on work of sample caracteristics, but they have both their own vibe :
- Primo is a Sample surgeon, he takes a sample as a sound (few timed samples like milliseconds) material and do with it what he wants to make it enter in his unique musical format!!
- Kanyé is more mélodic & the most of time likes let the original sample create an ambience which will be amplified by West's work (on rythmics & breaks more simple than DJ Premier's)!!
They are as good but so differents on theirs vibes!!
That what make Rap so eclectic ...

I don't want to take nothing away from Mr. west but there is no way in the world he could compare to preemo way to many classics from illmatic all the way down to the ownerz preemo is the best thing to hit hip-hop

i agree with you too... thats a wierd comparison if you ask me, like comparin oranges and tires or somethin... I don't think Common really meant it though anyways
