I water ours about once a week, with enough water that it runs out the drainage holes in the planter. I don't let it stand in water, though - when it's indoors I put it in the sink to water and let it drain before putting it back in its place.
Ours has been outside this summer, in the heat but not direct sunlight, and has been loving the hot temperatures we've been getting in North Texas - I just have to make sure it gets the once-a-week drenching.
The scientific name is Pachira aquatica, you may be able to get more information using that as a search term on Google.

Stick your finger in the soil. If the top three or four inches are dry then it is time to water.
