I did! I grew up poor but I learned that I didn't have to REMAIN poor and I learned the harsh lessons on why hard work means prosperity.

I am glad for my poor upbringing (it helped me out a lot) and that government cheese was slammin'!

There was cheese in my mother's tuna casserole but it wasn't government cheese. It was the supermarket brand version of Velveeta until we could afford real cheese.

I wouldn't say I grew up poor but it was definitely lower middle class. Actually the way many economists measure middle class, as being between 2X and 5X the poverty level of income, that would have put us below middle class for a number of years.

What the government did for me was to allow the economy to grow, through tax cuts and deregulation, so that it would create opportunities for someone with ambition. And because it did this, the Fed did not have to temporarily, artificially fuel growth with monetary policy to the degree it had before - and it could focus on price stability.

And tens of millions of us took advantage of it.

I did not grow up on cheese.
But cheese is good on pizza, in a sandwich, or as a snack.
I prefer provolone cheese to government cheese.
You can also put cheese on nachos, or even in potatoes.

This question should be in the "Food " section.

No Con or Republican would ever admit to that. They like to say that only Libs and Dems use it but the truth is people of all backgrounds have financial problems.

Most Con/Reps follow the motto "Do as I say, not as I do". They say things like "I need the assistance, I am not a freeloader. I'm a good person fallen on hard times"....all while collecting money and criticizing others. They criticize others for not favoring the war while they themselves are too scared to put on a uniform and go die for our freedom.

All I see is hypocrisy with Reps and Cons. Nothing lines up.

I did. I had a good chunk of my college tuition bill paid for by the Fed's.

Graduated with a 3.3, too.

Edit; I guess I should also add I worked a government job too at the Prison to help pay for everything else I had which consisted mainly of rent and bills and shopping for food at the 99 cent store.

I'm pretty conservative (not a neo-con)..

I remember the cheese, powdered milk, food stamps, always wearing hand-me downs, using socks for mittens in the winter...its all good. I couldn't control it, never complained about it and remember those days as some of the happiest in my life. Do you have a point??

I do recall about 20 years ago that the government gave away huge amounts of cheese that it had in storage. It was great cheese. They were trying to help out people when unemployment was high. It was a good program. Rather than giving out money they gave in kind.

I did. I was raised by a poor single mother who only had her GED. She worked two and three jobs at a time to raise me and my two brothers by on her own. She left our father because he was abusive to her.

Even with her working two and three jobs, she had a hard time making ends meet. We were on welfare up until I was in 6th grade. My mother was also going to night school because

A. She wanted a better life for my brothers and I
and
B. She wanted nothing more than to get off of welfare, and do it on her own.

I grew up watching my mother pay for our food with food stamps and getting free meals at school. My relatives used to give us hand me down clothes because we didn't have enough to buy new stuff.

I'll never forget the day my mother got her first real job that actually paid enough for her to support us on her own. She handed me $5 and said:

"This is for your lunch at school, I promise you that you'll never have to eat free lunch again"

She kept that promise.

I owe everything I am to my mother and feel that it is only right for me to strive to be the best I can be in honor of her sacrifice for me.

I didn't. My father worked but we were still poor. I have never received any form of government assistance. I am a conservative regardless of my income
