when i leave the house i bump it up to 85. do you think it's better for me to turn the a/c off if i'll be gone for around 11-12 hours or leave it at 85? if i turn off the a/c the house can get as hot as 90+ degrees. my friends say to just leave it at a hotter setting so that the a/c doesn't work so hard trying to cool down the house when i do get home. what do you think?

I work for a HVAC company (heating, ventilation and air conditioning). Turning your ac to 85 durring the day is not good for your electricty or gas bill, however when it is that hot it takes hours for your house to cool down if it is not running. So, if you were to leave your house with no ac durring the day and turn it to 80 when you get home it could take up to 4 hours to reach a comfortable temp. Turning it up to 85 durring the day is a good energy saver and it does help the equipment not run as hard. Either way it is ok. You have to decide if you want a longer life out of your a/c system (turn it off) or if you want to use it for what it is ment to be used for and leave it running at a higher temp so that you can get your house comfortable when you come home. Either way you are not hurting the system. Make sure to change/clean your filters regularly (in areas with extra smog like cities they need to be checked often) and do a service on the equipment every year to assure proper operation. Our company is not in Las Vegas we are in NY so I am not trying to sell you anything, just trying to help you get the life and comfort out of your system that you should have. Good luck hun. :)

OH, so jelous, used to live there and was transfered....miss home...

Anyway, did the same thing, leave it on, bump it up to 85/87 and then down to 80 when you are home. It takes more energy to cool a warm house and is harder on the compressor when you constantly turn it on and off.

When I leave and go out of town, I generally will pop the ac to about 10 degrees warmer than what I normally set it on. Only when I am gone for more than a week do I turn it off. Where I live now, it much more humid, but I still keep it set at 80 when home and 85 during the day. My hvac guy came last week and wanted to know why it was so warm in the house - I have never aclimated back to "normal" US temps.

I think u should give the a/c a break because its running all the time. If u have a couple fans run them when ur gone to keep the cool air circulating from the a/c. Then when u get home restart the a/c. By doing this u won't burn out ur a/c and ur home will still stay a bit cooler.

It takes a lot energy to bring the house down 5 degree. It may be better to just let the AC at the one temp. Then all the AC has to do, is to maintain that temp. You could give that a try and see if it has any affect on your bill at the end of the month. good luck.
